Pleasant Hill, Contra Costa County
For most of its history Pleasant Hill had no real center, so in 2000 the city built one: a downtown of shops, restaurants and a cinema arranged along new streets beside city hall. The city hall itself, designed by architect Charles Moore, sits on a small lake. Rodgers Ranch, a farmhouse of 1867, survives nearby as a reminder of the orchards that came before.
